Ross on Wye nestles in the stunning countryside of South Herefordshire. The ancient town of Ross on Wye, also referred to as the gateway to the Wye Valley, was originally known simply as 'Ross', it became Ross on Wye in 1931. It was first recognised in records in the year 1016, has a 17th Century Market House, a 13th Century Church and many splendid timber framed Tudor buildings.
Throughout the centuries, Ross has benefited from many generous town folk; John Kyrle, for example, whose name is carried by a local school, and who was known as the 'Man of Ross' – a name carried on by a local pub. These town folk helped to set up schools, hospitals and also local charities. Traditionally an agricultural community, it gave local farmers and villages places to trade their produce. The famous Ross Market House still to this day holds markets, a wonderful achievement.
